Wells Fargo Center in Miami receives LEED Project of the Year by USGBC

MIAMI, FL, September 6, 2011 – Built by Suffolk Construction and designed by Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe and Associates, the Wells Fargo Center in Miami was recently selected as the LEED Core and Shell Project of the Year by the USGBC’s South Florida chapter.

The 47-story Wells Fargo Center completed by Suffolk Construction was originally slated to achieve LEED Silver, but through a collaborative effort and extensive planning, the team upgraded the effort and brought the project to LEED Gold certification standards.

During the construction process, Suffolk’s team worked to recycle nearly 90% of all construction debris, diverting this waste from the landfill.  Successful efforts were also made to utilize as many regional materials as possible.

Sustainable elements of the building include low-flow fixtures, low-emitting coatings and paints, bicycle storage space, designated parking for fuel-efficient vehicles, and low-e glass façade. The Class A office building currently has a recycling program in place for its tenants. The building has also implemented a high performance green cleaning program to maintain the indoor environmental quality. The program addresses appropriate staffing and training of maintenance personnel, as well as the use of sustainable cleaning materials, products, equipment, janitorial paper products and trash bags.

The building also utilizes a Flowzone Integrated Management System in order to use a chemical-free treatment for the water within the HVAC system. Use of this system results in the elimination of more than 600,000 pounds of chemicals and the discharge of 5,700,000 gallons of contaminated water that typically would have required treatment through a municipal sanitary system.

With recognition as LEED Core and Shell Project of the Year and its recent LEED Gold certification, the Wells Fargo Center has helped to set the standard for sustainable office space. The 740,000 square foot tower is adjacent to the JW Marriott Marquis which was built simultaneously by Suffolk Construction on a single city block in downtown Miami, Florida.
