Suffolk Receives the Associates Builders and Contractors National Award for Excellence in Safety

Leading construction management firm recognized for exemplary safety programs & commitment to jobsite safety

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 16, 2010– Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today announced that Suffolk Construction Company’s Southeast Region maintained an exemplary safety record that has earned them the prestigious national safety award in the General Contractor category of ABC’s National Safety Excellence Awards. Suffolk’s Regional Directors of Safety, John Murphy and Ken Becker, received the award in February during the 20th annual Excellence in Construction awards celebration at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel and Convention Center.

“We are extremely proud that ABC has recognized us for our safety accomplishments,” said Rex Kirby, President and General Manager, Suffolk Southeast Region. “This national award is a testament to our longstanding commitment to jobsite safety and our innovative training programs, which have helped our teams maintain an exceptional safety track record year after year.”

This year’s National Safety Excellence Award winners were selected from ABC member firms that achieved Platinum status in ABC's Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) program. During the selection process, national safety winners were judged on self-evaluation scores, lost workday case rates, total recordable rates, and interviews conducted by members of ABC’s National Environment, Health & Safety Committee.

The National Safety Excellence Awards were presented in three major North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code categories: NAICS 236 – Construction of Buildings; NAICS 237 – Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction; and NAICS 238 – Specialty Trade Contractors.
