"Suffolk is 'Best of the Decade'"
Boston Business Journal Suffolk has firmly established itself as one of the mainstays in the area's building industry -- indeed, in the business community at large. The Boston area's largest construction company -- and one of the largest companies, with $1.5 billion in 2008 revenue -- the construction firm has a solid national presence. And locally, it has been instrumental in changing the face of Boston. As the CEO of Suffolk Construction, John Fish has his fingers in just about every notable development project in the area. Fish has operations in four states and projects touching virtually every segment of the U.S. economy -- universities, hospitals, senior housing facilities, hotels, office buildings and retail stores are among his long list of customers. But growing his business and making money are only parts of Fish's story. Over the past decade Fish has shown a deep commitment to philanthropy and social leadership, particularly when it comes to inner-city youth.

"BIM's Value in Green Building"
Healthcare Building Ideas Magazine
Berry Vice President of Preconstruction Dave Slomsky and Director of Sustainability and project executive Michael Willett published an authoritative article that emphasized BIM's growing importance in the preconstruction process and its ability to help CMs adapt their business practices to the requirements of green building. In the article, they demonstrate that BIM can play a key role in helping project teams make timely decisions regarding sustainable design. Using examples from Baystate Medical Center, they made a strong case for the use of BIM during preconstruction to provide more effective cost savings.

Controlling Project Costs
Health Facilities Magazine Current economic conditions and the tightening of credit have caused some health care projects to be scaled back or delayed. In his January '09 article, "Complete Cost Control for Building Projects," Berry Vice President of Preconstruction Dave Slomsky discussed what health facilities professionals can do to find more cost efficiences in construction budgets. Using examples, he showed how building with virtual technology (BIM) provided cost savings as well as coordination efficiency, reduced on-site change orders, and compressed building schedules. He also demonstrated how preconstruction, design planning and sound financial and risk management can help project teams control costs.
Planning Key to Complex Projects
Healthcare Building Ideas Magazine Working on one of the most complex construction projects in recent Berry history provided project executive Shawn Seaman plenty to talk about in his January '09 bylined article, "Construction Complexities: The Importance of Planning Ahead." In the feature article, Shawn shared his experiences with managing construction of the 22-story Center for Life Science/Boston in the heart of the Longwood Medical Area, one of the most densely populated and congested medical/educational areas in the region. Shawn described a myriad of construction challenges, including a custom-designed curtain wall, complex utility relocation, and a simultaneous tenant fit-out. He also highlighted how MEP coordination, the use of advanced technology, sound preconstruction planning, project management and tracking, and safety practices all contributed to the successful completion of this award-winning LEED Gold certified state-of-the-art facility.
