THOUGHTS TO BUILD ON: GENERATIONAL DIVERSITY

GENERATIONAL DIVERSITY: CHALLENGING, REWARDING AND ESSENTIAL.
Hello again! In my last entry, I talked about where technology is taking us. I made the point that we could now achieve an unprecedented level of collaboration, for the betterment of our work and our world. Now, let me tell you why I think that making collaboration work within our teams is as challenging as it is essential.
We have two types of professionals in our employ today: A bright new generation, fresh out of school. And a more seasoned, experienced generation. Back in the day, it was the latter group that lead the way. “Watch and learn,” they’d say to the younger ones. But today, the younger generation has a lot to teach their older cohorts. Because though they’ve never seen a rotary phone or used a typewriter, they’ve grown up using digital communications and information technologies, to a point where they are second nature to them.
As I’ve said before, it’s our company-wide embrace of leading-edge technologies that will not just differentiate us, but help us rise above the “commodity” perception that so many have of our industry. And why wouldn’t they? Since 1964, non-farm industries have increased productivity by 200%. While at the same time, our industry’s productivity has declined 25%!
What a huge opportunity we have in front of us! And how important it is that the younger and older generations come together to teach one another, and help Suffolk become all we are capable of becoming.
Until next time, be well. And build smart!
